ORGANIC AND BIODYNAMIC AGRICULTURE

Our philosophy is based on obtaining the highest quality extra virgin olive oil with total respect for the environment through organic and biodynamic agriculture.

The estate is registered with the CCPAE (Catalan Council for Organic Agricultural Production), therefore it is certified as "organic" and also as "biodynamic" since it has a biodynamic certificate, from the international biodynamic agriculture certifier DEMETER.

But... what is biodynamics?

"It is a holistic approach to agriculture where vitality is the priority"

Biodynamic agriculture has its origins in lectures given by Rudolf Steiner in 1924.

The term "biodynamics" comes from the Greek bios (life) and dynamis (force) and means that this method works in accordance with the energies of life, seeking a supposedly correct relationship between man and the earth, trying to ensure the health of the soil and plants. This mode of production and processing of oil and other products is based on terrestrial and cosmic rhythms.

It is the one that most follows the rhythms and cycles of nature

We work according to a biodynamic calendar that guides us on the most favorable days to carry out certain tasks in the field and at the mill based on the moon.

It is the one that uses the least chemicals

We have reduced the chemicals that are thrown into the field to zero, replacing them with biodynamic preparations made on the estate itself and phytotherapy (vegetable infusions).

Human intervention is the most environmentally friendly

We try to have the greatest biodiversity possible and we do this by interspersing crops with forests. We don't plow, we chop the herbs.

The inner planets (those located between the Earth and the Sun) have effects on crops and plants, such as effects on growth, color, seed production and, therefore, also on the qualities of the products that are extracted from them. This is the case of biodynamic olive oil.

Biodynamic preparations

Biodynamic preparations strengthen soil quality by boosting microbial activity and humus formation.

This humus is the substance created by the decomposition of organic matter present in the surface layer of the soil.

.

Biodynamic agriculture takes into account cosmic rhythms to carry out crop management practices. The Demeter certificate does not oblige, but it advises to carry out treatments taking into account whether the position of the moon is favorable depending on whether the crops are to produce fruit, flowers, leaves or roots. And also to produce products such as olive oil, which should preferably be milled on a flower or fruit day of the biodynamic calendar; and it is not recommended on a leaf or root day and, obviously, never on a node day, which are days when it is better not to do work in the field.

The preparation 500 strengthens the quality of the soil by promoting microbial activity and the formation of humus.

How is the preparation 500 prepared?

In early autumn, cow horns are filled with manure without straw (so that there are no air spaces inside) and preferably from cows that have already given birth, as this manure is ideal for biodynamic agriculture. They are buried until spring in a meadow or forage field that has a good layer of humus. Boggy soils, soils with tree or shrub roots and areas near road walls and ditches should be avoided. The contents of the horn are removed in spring and stored in a dry place, in a box surrounded by peat. The horns can be used again the following year.

Preparation 501 is used to increase the immunity of the plant, strengthening photosynthesis and improving its maturation. It enhances the harmonious action of cosmic forces on plants and “connects them with the cosmos”.

How is preparation 501 prepared?

After Easter, quartz crystals are ground until they become a fine flour. It is mixed with a few drops of rainwater to make a thick slurry and introduced into the horn. The horns are buried in the spring and removed at the end of September or beginning of October. The contents of the horn are then extracted and stored in a glass jar in a sunny, dry place. The horns in this preparation cannot be reused.

This preparation serves to regenerate the soil where the organic matter is immobilized or blocked, to increase its fertility and counteract its impurities since it is a microbiological activator of the manure for subsequent composting.

How is the preparation of Maria Thun prepared?
Egg shells and basalt powder are mixed with the cow dung and stirred with a shovel for an hour, before being placed in a bottomless box in the ground. It is left there for about eight weeks. The compost preparations (502 to 507) are then added and left there for about four weeks. Then it is removed and removed again and put back in the box. Then the compost preparations (502 to 507) are added again and it is left for four more weeks. The preparation can be used when it is dark brown in color. Like preparations 500 and 501, Maria Thun is also applied with a homeopathic dilution of water.

Preparation 502 is essential for the dynamization of manure. It is used to inoculate it, as it is a conductor of energy, and is intended to stimulate the presence of sulfur and potassium in plants during their growth. Consequently, the formation and balance of proteins and carbohydrates will be reinforced, achieving more balanced plants and resistant to pests and diseases.

Fresh yarrow flowers, collected in full bloom on a sunny day, are placed in a stag's bladder. The bladder is hung in the sun before June 24; it is buried in early autumn and retrieved after Easter. The preparations for compost (from 502 to 506) are kept in glass or clay ceramics, surrounded by peat or coconut fiber, and stored in a dark and cool place, such as a cellar or basement.

The 503 preparation activates and stabilizes soil nitrogen, vivifies the soil and produces healthier plants.

Chamomile flowers are picked early on a sunny morning, left to dry in the shade, and stored until fall. An infusion is made with chamomile flowers and this mixture is introduced into a cow's small intestine that is buried in a cool, humid and ventilated area. It is removed before the end of April. Compost preparations (502 to 506) are kept in glass or earthenware, surrounded by peat or coconut fibre, and stored in a dark, cool place, such as a cellar or basement.

Preparation 504 promotes soil structure and increases its fertility. It acts on iron processes and contributes to the development of crop growth.

Bundles of cut nettle are tied early in the morning, when they begin to bloom, and placed between natural clay tiles (without additives). They are buried in the spring, sealing the tiles with two natural clay bricks on both corners and tied with twine so that they do not open. They are recovered a year later. The preparations for compost (from 502 to 506) are kept in glass or clay ceramics, surrounded by peat or coconut fiber, and stored in a dark and cool place, such as a cellar or basement.

Preparation 505 promotes the formative forces exactly where they are needed to prevent plant diseases and stimulates calcium processes.

 How is preparation 505 prepared?

In early autumn, the bark of an old oak (Quercus Robur) is taken and crushed so that the coarsest particles are the size of a grain of wheat and inserted into the skull of a sheep or goat, tightly tightened, and the hole closed with a little clay. In early autumn, it is buried in mud of plant matter on the edge of a water stream. It is retrieved in the spring. The preparations for compost (from 502 to 506) are kept in glass or clay pottery, surrounded by peat or coconut fiber, and stored in a dark, cool place, such as a cellar or basement.

Preparation 506 serves to concentrate salicylic acid and potassium in the soil and helps maintain verticality, increasing root formation.

In Autumn, the dry dandelion flowers "Taraxacum Officinale" are infused (picked on a sunny spring morning in the early flowering phase: it must be observed that the inner petals of the flower are still closed) and are wrapped in pieces of mesentery beef (the thin fold of skin on the belly from which the
small intestine hangs). They are buried and recovered in spring. Compost preparations (502 to 506) are kept in glass or earthenware, surrounded by peat or coconut fibre, and stored in a dark, cool place, such as a cellar or basement.

Preparation 507 balances the phosphorus processes in the compost, provides heat to the compost pile environment and actively participates in the formation of flowers and fruits.

How is preparation 507 prepared?

Fresh valerian flowers are infused and once the infusion has cooled it is stored in bottles. It is left to ferment anaerobically for about six weeks, strained, then covered and stored in a dark cellar. Valerian juice can be used for several years in the compost and also to prevent frost.
